Have you noticed the four raised planning boxes that are adjacent to the basketball court? They comprise the Cedarwood Learning Garden. The Parks and Recreation Department have given permission to plant a particular type of seedling in each of them. Now is the time for fall planting. Brad Baker, a Cedarwood resident, whose company is White Oak Consulting, will be doing the fall planting this weekend and he invites interested residents including children to attend each of these free learning sessions. Sessions will be on Saturday, Sept. 10, at 2pm and Sunday, Sept. 11, at 10am.
One of the planting boxes will be for tree seedlings. We will plant representative seedlings of 30 species of trees that are found in Cedarwood. This year has been difficult for trees because of drought conditions. Another planting box will be devoted to native perennials. Native perennials are beneficial to insects and butterflies. Included in this planting box will be milkweed and mullein for bees and insects to live on. The third box will contain half winter cress and half cilantro. Winter cress is a peppery arugula green that is often mixed with kale, parsley and corn. Cilantro comes from coriander seed and used as a salad green for making pesto. The fourth box will be planted with kale seeds, sugar pea seeds, radish seeds, and parsley seeds.
